Description

Iman was just finishing her prayers, slowly folding her mat, when she heard a voice at the door. It was her friend Amira, already dressed in her white Islamiyya school uniform, looking sharp in her white shirt, trousers, and hijab. Amira wasn't in the mood for wasting time. She looked at Iman and said, "Are you just going to keep looking at me? Won't you hurry up so we aren't late?" This was how their day started, with that rush and the feeling that something was always about to happen. Iman quickly grabbed her school things, her books and her Quran, and they headed out. Iman even had to hide the house key in their secret spot because her mom wasn't back from wherever she went. You can tell right from the start that Iman's life is a bit complicated, even in the small things like who is home and who isn't.

When they got to the school, their worst nightmare was waiting for them. The school leaders were at the gate catching anyone who was late. For someone like Iman, who is naturally shy and very afraid of getting into trouble or feeling pain, this was a disaster. She actually said, "I am in trouble today, we are going to be whipped, me, Iman." It is so relatable because we all remember that fear of the teacher's cane back in school. What made it worse was that Amira’s own brother, Ahmed, was the one in charge of the discipline that day. He wasn't going to give them a pass just because they were family or friends. He told them, "I swear I must beat you, do you think you are better than the others who were late?" It was a tense moment, but it showed how much Amira cared for Iman. When Ahmed was ready to swing the cane, Amira stepped up and took the lashes for her friend. She didn't want Iman to get hurt because she knew how much Iman hated trouble. The drama didn't stop at school, though. On their way home, things got even uglier. Iman ran into Anty Mariya and some of the other girls from her house, like Sa'a and Bilkisu. These aren't just normal siblings; there is a lot of tension because Iman is what they call an "agola," which basically means she is a stepchild brought into the house. They started shouting at her, accusing her of not waiting for the younger kids. Anty Mariya was really mean, calling her names and telling her she didn't belong there. It was heart-breaking to see how they treated her. They said things like, "She should just go back to her father's house if she has one." Amira, being the firecracker she is, tried to defend Iman, but it just made the sisters angrier. If you like stories about family drama and tough situations, you should check out DIYAM or maybe ZUMUNTAR KENAN to see how different families handle their problems.

As they walked away from the shouting, Iman was crying. Amira, trying to understand why her friend stayed in such a toxic house, asked her a very direct question. She asked if Iman's father was dead. Iman wiped her eyes with her hijab and said, "Amira, my dad is alive, he hasn't passed away, he is in Tudun Wada here in Kaduna." This is where the mystery of the story by Halima K Mashi really starts to pull you in. If her dad is alive and living in the same city, why is she staying in a house where everyone treats her like she is garbage? Iman told Amira that there is a very big reason why she can't leave, but she wasn't ready to talk about it yet. It makes you wonder what kind of secret could be so heavy that a girl would choose to stay where she is hated. It’s the kind of suspense you find in the best Hausa novels available these days.

When Iman finally got home, she found that the sisters had already reached there and told a bunch of lies to the elders. Haj Kulu, who is Mami’s mother, was already fired up and ready to scold Iman. She didn't even wait to hear the truth. She just started insulting Iman and even threatened to deal with Amira for speaking up. Iman didn't say a word; she just crept into her room. This part of the book really makes your blood boil because you can see how unfair life is for her. She is trying to follow every rule, trying to be a good girl, but the people around her are determined to make her life miserable. It reminds me of the struggles in HANGEN DALA where the characters have to fight for their place in the world.

The only person who truly understands Iman is her mother. When Iman went into the parlor, she saw her mom sitting there, looking very worried. Her mom had heard all the shouting from the other wives and children. Instead of adding to the noise, her mom just asked her gently what happened. Even when Iman explained that she didn't do anything wrong, her mom gave her the kind of advice only a very patient woman could give. She told Iman to just keep her head down and apologize even if they are the ones who are wrong, just to keep the peace. Her mom is such a beautiful character. Iman thinks to herself, "My mom is the kind of mother that is hard to find." She is the one who taught Iman how to pray, how to be clean, and how to cook so well that even the people who hate them can't help but enjoy their food. The kitchen scene in the book is actually quite sweet. Iman joined her mother to help with the cooking. They were making *dan wake*, and the way the author describes the smell of the onions and the steam makes you feel like you are right there in the kitchen with them. Even though there is so much hate in the house, the kitchen is like a small island of peace for them. Her mom's cooking is so good that even the husband, who usually stays out, sent word that he wanted his lunch delivered to the market. He is proud of her cooking. It’s a small victory for Iman and her mother, showing that they have value even if the other wives don't want to admit it. But the peace never lasts long in this house. After eating, Iman decided to go and visit Mami, who had been sick and stayed home from school. She had to sneak in because she was so afraid of running into Haj Kulu again. She found Mami feeling a bit better, mostly because she had eaten some of Iman’s mom's delicious food. They were having a nice talk, and Mami was being kind, which is rare in that house. But just as they were getting comfortable, they heard Haj Kulu’s voice approaching. You can almost feel Iman’s heart start to race. The fear she feels is so real that you just want to reach into the book and pull her out of there. This novel, TAWA TA SAMENI, is really a rollercoaster of emotions. It shows how love and hate live side by side in the same building. It is definitely one of those Hausa novels online that you won't want to put down once you start.

The story is about much more than just a girl being bullied. It is about a girl trying to find her identity when she is caught between two worlds. She has a father she doesn't live with and a stepfather's house where she isn't wanted. She has a mother who is a saint but maybe too patient for her own good. And then there is the mystery of why they are there in the first place. Is it because of money? Is it a family secret? Is it for protection? As you read through the chapters, you start to see the pieces of the puzzle coming together. I really think you will enjoy this book because it feels so real. The way they talk, the way they fight, and the way they care for each other is just like real life in a big Nigerian household. Halima K Mashi did a great job making us feel Iman's fear and her hope. You will find yourself rooting for her to finally stand up for herself, or at least find a way to be happy. It is a story that stays with you long after you finish the first part. You can find this novel and many other amazing stories at Taskar Novels.
